Pine (Pinus)-Woolly pine needle aphid

Schizolachnus piniradiatae

Description, biology and damage Mature woolly pine needle aphids are close to 0.1 inch in length, long-legged, dark green or brown and covered with a white, woolly material. The aphid can be found in colonies among the needles. The aphid produces large amounts of honeydew (a sweet, sticky material) which often is covered by a black growth of sooty mold. Heavy aphid infestations may cause trees to turn yellowish, but otherwise cause only minor damage. Honeydew attracts ants and yellowjackets, wasps and baldfaced hornets.
