Choristoneura occidentalis
Pest description and damage Adult moths are mottled orangish brown; wingspan is up to 1 inch. Larvae are typically green to brown with a darker head and grow to about 1 inch in length. Larvae feed on buds and foliage and tie shoot tips together with webbing to make a nest. Spruce budworm is mainly a pest of balsam and subalpine firs. Although considered a significant problem in forestry, this insect is an infrequent pest in the landscape.
