Cause The result of fruit (or young leaves) being exposed to direct sunlight, especially under periods of high temperatures and high relative humidty. Fruit that are rapidly exposed to sunlight due to defoliation by biotic pathogens are very susceptible to sunburn.
Symptoms Fruit develop sunken, light-brown to white colored areas where they are exposed to direct sunlight. Affected areas are prone to colonization by secondary fungi, which can mask the sunburned portion and lead to fruit rot. Tender leaves and stems develop a light-brown-gray or white color when affected.
Cultural control
- Keep foliage free of diseases that could lead to defoliation.
