Cause A phytoplasma that is transmitted by the sugar beet leafhopper, Circulifer tenellus. Daikon appears more susceptible than round red varieties. Seed yield losses of 30% to 40% are common and are estimated to range up to 95%.
Symptoms Diseased plants exhibit phyllody, in which the normal flower changes into leaf-like structures, and common virescence, in which chloroplasts develop in normally white tissue, resulting in a green appearance. Seed set is also reduced.
Cultural control Initial attempts to control aster yellows in radish have been unsuccessful. Further research is needed.
