Diagnosis and Testing

The OSU Turfgrass Disease Diagnosis Laboratory provides quick and accurate diagnostic information and management recommendations for turfgrass problems. This diagnostic lab supports golf courses, commercial turfgrass managers, and homeowners.

Diagnostic services include: visual diagnosis, microscopic examination, pathogen culturing, disease management recommendations, diagnostic results via phone or email, and a full diagnostic report available with an additional fee.

Pathogen identification by DNA sequencing

Oregon samples: $128/sample.

Out-of-state samples: $189/sample.

Bacterial or fungal cultures that are purified will be identified by sequencing a single DNA region (e.g. ITS or 16S). Identification to species will be provided when possible, but it may be limited to genus depending on the organism.

The University of Idaho Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology and Nematology offers diagnostic services for plants at the Parma and Idaho Falls research and extension centers. We have state of the art labs offering a range of diagnostic tests from culturing to molecular diagnostics. We will also investigate the cause of various plant problems on a range of hosts and provide advice for disease management. Both labs are part of the National Plant Diagnostics Network (NPDN) and adhere to the procedures and reporting requirements required of member labs.

The major goal of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Plant Health Program is to protect and enhance Oregon's agricultural industries, environment, and quality of life by providing diagnostic services, testing, surveys, and certification for plant pests and diseases. The Plant Health Program supports the specialty seed and nursery industries by offering services that enable Oregon growers and farmers to meet requirements for both domestic and export markets.

There are several plant disease diagnostic facilities based in the Pacific Northwest that can help determine the identity of pathogens involved in plant problems. Publicly supported clinics are listed below. The University of Idaho performs nematode tests. A fee is levied for each sample of soil or roots tested.

The WSU Puyallup Plant & Insect Diagnostic Laboratory provides diagnostic assistance to citizens and businesses of western WA and supports the work of WSU Extension.

The Soil Health Laboratory provides inorganic chemical analysis of soils, plants, and water. Routine procedures include standard soil testing methods, nutrient analysis of plant tissue, and inorganic water analysis.
