Weed Management Handbook

2,4-D amine

Rate Broadcast treatment: 3 to 4 lb ae/A

Time Apply in spring to rosettes prior to bolting.

Remarks Repeated applications will be needed to fully control plants arising from the seedbank.

Caution Avoid drift to sensitive crops.

clopyralid (Stinger)

Rate 0.093 to 0.187 lb ae/A (4 to 8 oz/A)

Time Apply when beets are in the cotyledon to eight-leaf stage, and when weeds are actively growing.

Remarks Target weeds are hairy and black nightshade. Preharvest interval is 30 days.

ethofumesate (Nortron SC, Ethotron)

Washington and Oregon only

Rate Preemergence: 1.875 lb ai/A (60 fl oz/A); early postemergence: maximum rate is 5.25 fl oz/A at 2- and 4-leaf stage, and 10.6 oz/A at 6- to 8-leaf. Weed control diminishes in fine-texture soils and soils with high organic matter.

Time Apply after planting and activate with at least 0.5 inch water.

ammonium nonanoate (AXXE)

Rate 6 to 8% solution to control small annual weeds (<1 inch); 8 to 10% solution for burndown of annual weeds 1 to 4 inches tall; 10 to 13% for weeds larger than 4 inches tall; a 15% v/v solution for maximum vegetative burndown for control of perenni- als or dense weed growth.

Time Apply to thoroughly wet weed foliage as a directed spray around containers. Most effective a temperatures above 60º F.

Planting conifers on fields or harvest units with heavy grass and weeds usually reduces plantation survival and growth. A moderately dense stand of grass in an open field in western Oregon can be expected to remove virtually all available moisture in the top 12 inches of soil by the end of June. The advantage of herbicides is that a single treatment can give nearly complete weed control during the first season after planting and may give partial weed control in later seasons.
