Latest revision:
March 2024

Cause Barley stripe mosaic virus is transmitted by pollen, seed, and leaf contact. Wheat and oats also are affected. Tests are being conducted on varietal resistance. The disease has been found in the Klamath area of Oregon.

Symptoms Symptoms are similar to the fungal disease, barley stripe. Yellow spots, stripes, and mottle appear on leaves. Later, spots and stripes may turn brown, often in a V-shape. Leaf blades may be nearly white, and plants may be stunted. The number of seeds per head, number of heads per plant, and kernel weight decrease.

Cultural control

  • Use seed that has been tested and found free of all known problematic viruses.
